Sermon Title: "The Whole Armor of God”

The message teaches that believers do not have to face spiritual warfare in their own strength. God has already supplied the whole armor of God, that armor is sufficient for every spiritual battle, and believers are sustained by the One who provided it.

The sermon was titled “The Whole Armor of God.” It was preached from Ephesians 6:10-20 as part of the Doctrine and Duty series and continued the previous message on preparing for spiritual battle.

The sermon emphasizes three truths: the armor has been supplied by God, the armor is sufficient for the believer, and the believer is sustained by the God who supplied the armor. Christians do not have to manufacture their own spiritual defenses.

It means God has already provided what His children need for spiritual protection. Rather than depending upon human effort or attempting to create our own defenses, believers are called to take what God has provided and “be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.”

God's armor is sufficient as He provided it, and every piece is necessary. The sermon compares picking and choosing pieces of the armor to treating the Word of God like a buffet, taking what we like and leaving what we do not. God calls believers to take the whole armor rather than selecting only the parts they prefer.

The belt of truth reminds believers that truth holds us where we need to be. Jesus Christ is the truth, and the Word of God is truth. Christians must stand upon biblical truth and refuse to allow things contrary to God's Word to hinder their spiritual lives, families, or churches.

The breastplate protects the heart, reminding believers of the importance of guarding their hearts spiritually. The sermon uses Samson and Delilah as an example of what can happen when someone gradually lets down the guard around the heart until things are surrendered that should never have been surrendered.

Paul describes the believer's feet as being shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace. Just as the proper footwear prepares someone for the activity ahead, Christians should always be prepared to carry the Gospel of Jesus Christ wherever God leads them.

The shield of faith enables believers to quench the fiery darts of the wicked, while the helmet of salvation points to guarding the mind. The sermon particularly challenges Christians to be careful about what they watch, scroll through, and allow into their minds and hearts.

The sword of the Spirit is the Word of God. While much of the armor provides spiritual defense, God also places a weapon in the believer's hand. Christians therefore need to know, trust, and use the Word of God when facing spiritual attacks.

Paul follows the description of the armor by telling believers to pray always. Having the armor does not mean Christians become self-sufficient. Spiritual strength still comes from the Lord, and believers must continually depend upon Him through prayer.

The repeated instruction in Ephesians 6 is to stand. Believers are called to stand against the wiles of the devil, withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. That stand is not made in human strength, but by being strong in the Lord and in the power of His might.

The same God who supplies sufficient armor also sustains the believer who wears it. Christians can stand because their strength does not ultimately come from themselves. God provides the protection, His Word provides truth, and His power enables His people to remain standing through the battle.
